At the Pavilion
It was 15h in Portugal, when people are working in RL, which means people in Pacific Time were waking up (I suppose, I’m not sure). I’m still wondering how many people could have appeared at my presentation at The Pavilion! More than 30 persons! I think we can take this observation as a measure of the Education Faire success and the congratulations go directly to Pathfinder Linden, who had the idea for the Faire.
My pictures are not very good. As you all understand, I was more worried with the presentation and answering all the questions than with taking snapshots!
The session was very participated. I felt I let some people thinking about the ideas presented… (that is good! 🙂 )
At the end, some questions were made both in written chat both in voice. I’ve answered them in voice. But I felt that I’ve missed some written chat in the meanwhile. Always the problem with voice and chat at the same time, knowing there’s people who don’t ear the conversation.
New contacts were made. New persons are now colleagues to discuss common research concerns. It was very good.
A special thanks to friends and colleagues who could appeared (from Portugal and from Brazil).
National press writes about Education Support Faire
For all to know, the Jornal Diário from Azores Regional Government Portal has written about Education Support Faire, 25-30th Jan. This is a real life journal. So, this event has been announced within the portuguese press.
Great work, Pathfinder and all the people involved in its organization! 🙂
Sloodle
Por saber que há vários colegas meus, RL, interessados na utilização e exploração do Sloodle, venho apenas alertar para a existência de uma mesa redonda sobre o assunto, a decorrer na Education Support Faire, dia 27, pelas nossas 15h. Ver calendário.
Retirado do site do Sloodle acima linkado, deixo a imagem que esquematiza o conceito.
A referida mesa redonda intitula-se “Exploring the benefits of Moodle integration”. Aos interessados no assunto, pode ser um momento enriquecedor, sobretudo porque a mesa redonda parece estar a cargo dos criadores do Sloodle.
Education Faire opened
The Second Life Education Support Faire 2009 has a theme selected by Pathfinder: “Ecosystems of Support” like he explains in the wiki. Two simple words that comprise a big idea – a Faire where educators or others related to educational issues could find support either from LL either from Residents. I like both the theme both the idea! 🙂
Today, one hour after the Official Opening of the Faire, the Pavilion was full!

At the Education Support Faire in SL
As I have announced in this post, I will participate in the Education Support Faire in SL. I think the schedule is open for everyone to check it out. Please, try the link and tell me if it is working.
I’ll be presenting my research on 28th January, 15h00m (GMT), 7.00 am (PSL). That research has been conducting at Academia Portucalis. Portucalis’ blog has announced the event.
My presentation is named –Â “Learning & Teaching in SL:Â Figuring Out Some Variables”.

Iniciação à construção em SL (I)
Já tinha anunciado num post anterior que vou começar a dar aulas in-world.
Venho apenas relembrar que o Curso de Iniciação à Construção em SL se inicia hoje, dia 13 de Janeiro, pelas 22h30m, na Academia Portucalis. Destina-se a todos os que ainda não dominam as ferramentas de construção e vamos fazer coisas giras! 🙂 O Curso é composto por três aulas, sendo a participação em cada uma um pré-requisito para a seguinte. No final, a Academia entrega Diploma a quem completou o Curso.

De novo, na SLESES
Abro este post, sobretudo, a pensar nos que, em Santarém, assistiram à palestra dada hoje na SLESES (in-world) e queiram ver algum assunto mais clarificado, ou levantar questões suscitadas, ou debater algum aspecto em particular. É que quando terminámos, a hora de almoço apertava e não houve tempo para “conversas”!
A palestra decorreu do amável convite da minha colega Maria Barbas (aka Rocio Barbasz) para participar no seminário do Mestrado em Educação e Comunicação Multimédia da Escola Superior de Educação de Santarém.
Subordinei a comunicação ao tÃtulo: “Na construção de uma Didáctica de/em Second Life ® – do viver ao saber viver” – tendo descrito parte da investigação efectuada em SL e levantado algumas questões problema emergidas.
Foi bom ter partilhado com os presentes o que tenho analisado em SL. Espero que isso tenha sido útil para os vossos sucessos slianos (e outros!). “Estou” aqui e no mail para receber as vossas reacções!

“…Organizations or individuals who specifically provide support services for educators, students, or academics in Second Life and would like to utilize space or give a speaking presentation should contact Pathfinder by email (pathfinder [at] lindenlab [dot] com).”
The final schedule will be announced in SLED, on 21st January.
A journal dedicated to virtual worlds research
To all of you who are doing some kind of research related to virtual worlds, it is worthwhile to consult this Journal times to times. The first volume and number appeared in July 2008, so it is a very new one.
Can this be an indicator that a community of interest has emerged and it is growing, leading us to a research area well-defined?

A new paper to read
In the last three conferences I’ve been invited to do, I’ve spoke about a study conducted by K. Westmoreland Bowers, Matthew W. Ragas, and Jeffrey C. Neely from the College of Journalism and Communications, University of Florida. I also said that this study was not published yet.
Well, today I received the good news. The research is published in the International Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences 3; 1. The paper is named “Assessing the Value of Virtual Worlds for Post-Secondary Instructors: A Survey of Innovators, Early Adopters and the Early Majority in Second Life”. You can check it out here.

Reciclar em SL
Vou começar as aulas in-world. Desta vez, será um curso completo de Introdução à Construção, terminando com um cheirinho de um conceito que eu aprecio sobremaneira em SL, o de reciclar!
Reciclar em SL, na minha interpretação, significa transformar algo – um objecto que pouco nos diz, mas que foi fácil de obter – em qualquer coisa de que gostemos e possamos tirar proveito! 🙂
Se quiserem participar, o curso consta de 3 sessões que irão decorrer nos dias 13, 15 e 20 de Janeiro, com inÃcio à s 22h30m, na Academia Portucalis.
A calendarização das restantes aulas/cursos da Academia para o mês de Janeiro está anunciada aqui.

O evento esteve anunciado aqui e como podem perceber, no dia 28 de Novembro, andámos em visitas por esse SL fora. Foi um dia passado in-world à espera de quem aparecesse. Valeu! 🙂
O grupo de visitas das 21h30m foi bastante concorrido. Porque sou formadora na Academia Portucalis deixo a ligação para o post dedicado no blogue respectivo.
Sei também que, posteriormente, vários participantes voltaram a entrar in-world desejando conhecer mais sobre a plataforma com vista à sua exploração em contextos profissionais. Valeu mesmo! 🙂

In real life (RL) my name is Teresa Bettencourt. I’m a PhD teacher at University of Aveiro, in the Department of Didactics and Educational Technology (DTE). I’m also the assistent secretary of the Research Centre for Didactics and Technology in Teacher Education (CIDTFF). My research concerns are related to the educational potential of ICT on initial teacher training. I’m quite an old in this field! I started with DOS a long time ago! Now my interests converge to Second Life, as an enriched virtual world and environment that can enhance our actual teaching and learning models!
